Cats are very clean animals that are constantly taking care of their hygiene and keeping their weight clean. For this, they have the natural behavior of washing with the tongue. However, hair balls often form in the digestive tract. Most of the time the cat is able to expel the hair ingested by the feces, but, especially in the seedlings of the season (when there is greater hair loss), there may be a risk of the formation of hair balls. When the hair balls are larger, the cat has the ability to vomit to expel them, but there may be some risks, such as in case of not being able to expel the hair balls through vomiting or even breathing problems, such as choking. On the other hand, when eliminated at the intestinal level, they can cause dysregulation at the level of the intestinal flora, which can lead to diarrhea or intestinal obstructions that may require surgical intervention.
Hair ball prevention tips:
Avoid eating too much hair - brush your cat daily so you can eliminate the dead hair that your cat would inevitably ingest
Use malt supplements - malt pastes can be used to prevent and treat hairballs. Normally these work by preventing the formation of hair balls and help in eliminating the hair ingested by the feces. There are already quite palatable malt pastes on the market.
Give specific feed for hairballs - the feed for hairballs can be given at times of shedding or if your cat licks itself too often. It can also be given daily since it is a complete food with all the necessary nutrients for your cat's life.
